Tropical Butterflies Returns to South Coast Botanic Garden

SOAR opens May 1

April 28, 2024

Hundreds of tropical butterflies will once again call South Coast Botanic Garden home for the summer as SOAR - Tropical Butterflies opens for its fourth year on May 1. This seasonal exhibit also features a Host and Nectar garden that attracts many local pollinators - including the Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly - and an Emergence Chamber where lucky guests can see a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis.

“We can’t wait to have some fan favorites back in the Garden, including blue morphos, owls and zebra longwings,” says MaryLynn Mack, the Garden’s Chief Operating Officer. “While the butterflies are popular, our horticulture department has been hard at work both inside the pavilion and in the Host and Nectar Garden to ensure it’s a new plant experience for guests as well. We are proud that this has truly become a layered experience for all to enjoy.”

This year, guests will again have the opportunity to add-on the Butterfly Feeding Experience, for which they receive a nectar-filled ring to help attract butterflies close to them. This year's new offering is the Parent & Me: Butterflies 101 class. On select Fridays, guests can sign up for this class that includes a guided walk through the entire SOAR experience. Kids will create their own identification guide that you can use at the Garden and even their own backyard.

“SOAR has welcomed thousands of visitors over the years and has become a tradition for families, friends, schools and troop groups,” says Adrienne Nakashima, the Garden’s Chief Executive Officer. “We look forward to the arrival of the butterflies and to continue providing a space for guests of all ages to get up close and personal with these beautiful species. And the fact that guests can then leave the pavilion and further experience Bloom! will make this year of SOAR unlike any other.”

Bloom!, which opened April 1, features five floral displays featuring the best Mother Nature has to offer and additional photo opportunities. When guests arrive, they will receive a map leading them to each location, where they will be prompted to use their senses to experience the area in a new way. In addition to the five floral displays and photo moments, the Bloom! map will lead guests to even more areas in the Garden where spring blooms flourish.
